Enjoy 17 extra-long weekends this year

MUMBAI: You may curse your luck that Republic Day falls on a Sunday this year. Like it, there are five holidays that coincide with a Sunday and one that falls on a fourth Saturday. But this is more than compensated for by the 17 occasions when one can prolong the weekend to four or even five days by taking just one day off from work and combining it with holidays. The total is seven occasions more than last year and travel agents say they are already flooded with calls for holiday bookings. Also, like in most years, there will be nine dry days, with two each falling in January and October.

People who work five-day weeks will get 126 holidays (including Saturday and Sunday), up from 121 last year and 124 in 2012. Those who get the second and fourth Saturdays off will have 102 holidays, up from 94 last year.

Of the 17 long weekends, two are five-day long and the remaining four-day long, both categories including a day's leave from work. The first of the five-day weekends is October 1-5 and the second October 22-26. Three four-day weekends are in April and two each in March, August and November. The first four-day weekend was January 11-14 and the last will be December 25-28.

Travel agents say people are planning trips not only to destinations in India, but also abroad. "Goa, Mahabaleshwar and Matheran are the most popular destinations, followed by regions like the Konkan and Saputara," said a travel agent.

"Some are planning short-duration international trips to places like Dubai and Singapore."

A couple, the Joshis from Manpada, said weekends clubbed with public holidays are good as work does not get affected. "We are planning an international getaway to celebrate our 10th marriage anniversary," said the husband, who has been making holiday plans with the help of a travel agency in Naupada.

Managers at workplaces, including government offices, said that because a day's leave is necessary to avail of the 17 extended weekends, they expect a deluge of holiday applications and even sudden sick leaves. "We realize that employees may ask for holidays for the 17 occasions and have made the necessary arrangements to ensure work is not affected," said a banker.

MORAL STORY

There once was a bunch of tiny frogs...

... who arranged a running competition. The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower. A big crowd had gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer on the contestants...

The race began...

Honestly, no-one in crowd really believed that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower. You heard statements such as:

"Oh, WAY too difficult!!"

"They will NEVER make it to the top".

"Not a chance that they will succeed. The tower is too high!"

The tiny frogs began collapsing. One by one...

... Except for those who in a fresh tempo were climbing higher and higher...

The crowd continued to yell

"It is too difficult!!! No one will make it!"

More tiny frogs got tired and gave up...

...But ONE continued higher and higher and higher...

This one wouldn't give up!

At the end, everyone else had given up climbing the tower. Except for the one tiny frog who, after a big effort, was the only one who reached the top!

THEN all of the other tiny frogs naturally wanted to know how this one frog managed to do it?

A contestant asked the tiny frog how the one who succeeded had found the strength to reach the goal?

It turned out...

That the winner was deaf.
