National Technology Day - '11th May'


National Technology Day

On 11th May, 1998 India achieved a major technological breakthrough by successfully carrying out nuclear tests at Pokhran. Also first, indigenous aircraft "Hansa-3" was test flown at Bangalore on this day and India also performed successful test firing of the Trishul missile on the same day.

Considering above technological achievements on a particular date i.e. 11th May, the day of 11th May was chosen to be commemorated as National Technology Day.

Technology Day is celebrated as a symbol of quest for scientific inquiry, technological creativity and the translation of that quest in the integration of Science, Society and Industry. This day is also celebrated to honour technological innovations and their successful commercialization which makes fruits of research reach people at large. To commemorate this day, TDB instituted a National Award which is conferred upon both the provider of technology and the developer of technology product. The award carries an amount of Rs.10 Lakh each to the Industrial Concern and the technology provider, and a trophy each to both. In addition to this TDB has introduced cash Award of Rs. 5.00 lakhs and a trophy to be given to maximum three SSI units which have successfully commercialized a technology based product.

The Chief Guest for the National Technology Day celebration 2013 is Shri Pranab Mukherjee, President of India and will give the National Awards on 11th May i.e. tomorrow. The National Award for the year 2013 is being awarded to M/s Biovet Private Limited, Malur, Kolar for successfully developing commercial production of Bluetongue pentavalent vaccine and Johne’s disease vaccine and to Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh for developing the technologies of the two vaccines.

The President of India will also give SSI Award 2013 to M/s PYRODYNAMICS, Bengaluru for development and commercialization of a digital Strain Measurement System and to M/s Accurate Gauging & instruments Pvt. Ltd, Pune for development and commercialization of a coordinate measuring machine in 3D device for measuring the physical geometrical characteristics of an object. Apart from these awards DST and DBT awards will also be presented by the Chief Guest.

Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences will be Guest of Honour and shall launch Innovative Products supported by Technology Development Board and CSIR, mainly a Tablet PC, Handheld Micro PCR and Blood Chemistry Analyzer & Compact Portable Mobile Lab.

This year’s function is centered on the Theme “Innovation - Making a Difference”. Prof. Anil Gupta of IIM Ahmedabad who has done seminal work on Grass Route Innovation will give key note address.

Technology Development Board (TDB) organizes the National Technology Day function in which Department of Science & Technology, Department of Bio-Technology (DBT), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and other extended family of Scientific Departments also participates.


India Post to sell Gold coins at 7 per cent discount



Mumbai: The World Gold Council (WGC), in partnership with India Post and Reliance Money, is offering consumers a price reduction of 7 per cent on daily prices for the purchase of gold coins from India Post offices to celebrate the festival of Akshaya Tritiya, reports our correspondent. 


Consumers can purchase 99.9 per cent pure, Swiss-manufactured gold coins in denominations of one gram, five grams, eight grams, ten grams, 20 grams and 50 grams from a network of 970 India Post outlets across the country until 30 June 2013.

Somasundaram PR, managing director, India, WGC said: “Our partnership with In-dia Post and their vast network of outlets, allows us to make pure 24 carat gold accessible to a wide range of consumers. Coupled wi-th the recent price drop in gold, this additional discount means that we are offering consumers a great opportunity to buy gold.”
