How to boost your career by upgrading skills

Sometimes, when you reach the highest position for your skill set in a particular job, you could find yourself stagnating in the firm or industry.

You may not want to switch industries because starting afresh or taking a pay cut wouldn't be palatable. The best option in such a situation is to acquire additional educational qualification or skill set, which can boost your career.

Here's how to determine the course of action that would be right for you.

Graduate

If you are not a graduate, and don't have any other degree, you're already at a disadvantage in the job market. You might be a brilliant territory sales manager for an auto firm, having risen up the ranks through hard work and perseverance, but you may not make it to a regional manager.

More often than not, a clause in the company's HR policy will state that the qualifications required for a particular post include a graduate degree.

Even if your present employer is not short-sighted, your next one may be. Whether you are 20 years old or 40, it is worth investing in a part-time or full-time graduate degree. This will make a difference in your pay band or grade, sooner or later.

The professionals who should consider this option include those in the travel and hospitality industries, plant workers holding engineering diplomas, sales personnel and BPO employees. Remember to check with your HR team if the firm is willing to sponsor your efforts.

Generalise

If you are stagnating in your current post, try to have a more inclusive work profile. To do so, you will need to have a more generalised set of skills. Picking up a general qualification is useful when you want to switch industries, grow beyond your specialised vertical, or become the head of your department.

The most obvious option is a management qualification, which makes you more employable and improves career options. For young techies in big software companies, a full-time, 2-year MBA programme is the popular choice, while it's the one-year, full-time executive programme for professionals in their mid-30s.

If you can't afford to take a long break from work or need the income, go for shorter management development programmes or part-time/distance learning. There is something available in every field. If you are a doctor, a course in hospital administration will qualify you for registrar and business roles; a military officer's chances at top leadership improve with the Staff College qualification.

Apart from managerial lear ning, consider investing in oft-ignored soft skills and communication training programmes. The impact of such courses on your personality and career far outweigh the minuscule value of the certificate.

Specialise

Do you love your professional skills but dislike managerial or leadership roles? You can jumpstart a low-voltage career by specialising further. However, choose wisely as specialisation should involve the principle of scarcity; there should be a critical demand, but low supply, of specialists in the industry.

If you are in health care, consider training in paediatric specialities, given India's baby boom. As a pilot, you could go for a conversion course to the latest aircraft being purchased by the airline industry, where there is a shortage of qualified pilots.

A consultant or lawyer can specialise in a sector over a period of time before being selected as a partner. Even where direct benefits are not apparent, specialisation can open up new vistas.

Ask yourself before pursuing a course...

Upgrade

Are you a skilled professional working for an old and large firm, or the government? Look no further than your organisation's policies, where you will find detailed requirements and career progression options for each position.

If you have reached a plateau in your current role, there will be different courses and exams that will qualify you for a vertical or lateral movement. If you are in a government organisation, you will need to go through mandatory promotion courses and exams before you get your next pay grade. Even in other industries, upgrading your skills can earn a higher income.

As a commercial diver, upgrading for Hazmat (hazardous material) will qualify you for more lucrative dives. As a language worker, you can upgrade your linguistic skills to qualify as an interpreter/translator.

Cross-train

If you don't want to generalise or specialise, pick a course that excites you. Explore ways to complement your skill sets to make you more employable. As a print journalist, who finds graphics fascinating, you can opt for a Web designing course and move to both creation and delivery of online content.

A software engineer with a fascination for accounts could enrol for a part-time course infinance and accounts, and support the sales team with its pricing and accounting. Most professionals can get a PMP (project management professional) certification. Even if you do not get an opportunity to lead a new project, it can help you rework your existing job profile and improve your output and compensation.

To ensure that the benefits are realistic, speak to people who have pursued the course.

FIGHT AGAINST THE POLICY FIGHTING FOR THE ALTERNATIVE

Postal employees have always taken it as their motto to render best possible services to the people at large. We are conscious of our duties and responsibilities to the Nation. Inpsite of all limitations, we shall continue to discharge our duties towards the people and the Nation. But on the same breath, we want to make it clear that contended staff are always an asset to the Nation and discontentment if allowed to grow, it is bound to affect the services. We do claim that further improvement in the services can be brought out if joint endeavours are made by both Administration and unions. While we have successfully built up a strong movement through our united efforts, we do claim to maintain cordial relations with the administration at different levels – branch/Divisional/Circle and All India.

But our experience hitherto shows that maintaining cordial relation with administration alone will not solve the basic problems faced by the Postal employees. Most of the issues agitating the minds of the Postal employees are due to the overall policy of the Government. Proposed move to permit entry of private sector into Postal services by granting licences to the transnational courier companies, Denial of legitimate rights of the Gramin Dak Sevaks including Civil Servant status and bonus-parity, Non-payment of revised wages to the casual labourers, unjustified abolition of vacant Posts, Refusal to appoint Seventh Pay Commission and Inclusion of GDS under its purview, merger of 50% DA, inhuman 5% restriction on compassionate appointments, introduction of share-market oriented contributory Pension Scheme, non-removal of bonus ceiling, downsizing, outsourcing, contractualisation, corporatization etc are all directly linked with the polices of the Government. Inspite of our sincere cooperation, if things are not moving in the proper direction, we have to be ready for a serious course of action. We can never allow the situation to continue like this which is bound to cause deterioration in services and also adversely affect the interest of the employees. We should analyse and understand the root cause of the problems and shall find out remedy.

The logic of the neo-liberal reforms is maximization of profit and minimization of cost of labour as well as people. Being a capitalist agenda, it operates in that direction in a spontaneous manner. It maximizes profit by keeping the wages suppressed and also by generating a huge army of unemployed as reserve, to facilitate such suppression of wages. Under neo-liberal order it promotes speculation to multiply profit, thereby further aggravating unemployment, price rise and poverty. When it falls into crisis, as have happened at the present juncture, it seeks to shift the entire burden of the crisis to the people and workers. That is why our genuine demands are denied. Hence the fight against the galobalisation policies assumes paramount importance. We have to change this policy and we should continue our fight for an alternative policy.

Alternative to the imperialist globalization policy is nothing else but socialism, complete emancipation of society from all exploitation. Change in the system, or transition of the society, does not happen automatically. The working class, including the Postal employees, has to play a pro-active role in intensifying the struggle and prepare itself to lead the struggle for change in the system. It has to sharpen the struggle further, unifying the entire working class against the neo-liberal policies and rally the people around it to achieve the change. When struggle intensifies, at some point of time they may concede some of our demands. But that is not the end. We should continue our struggle further, till these policies are reversed completely and an alternative system comes into existence. For this we should elevate the consciousness of the workers and heighten the quality of the struggle further. Let us have a clear understanding that the fight against the policy is nothing but fighting for an alternative in the long run, an alternative society which bring an end to the exploitation of one human being by another. Therefore our present day activities must continue to target the present exploitative system, expose its anti-people, anti-working class character.

DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE REFORMS & PUBLIC GRIEVANCES HAS ISSUED AN ORDER PERTAINING TO SIMPLIFYING THE PROCEDURES OF SELF CERTIFICATION PROVISION

No.K-11022/67/2012-AR
Government of India
Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions
Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances

Sardar Patel Bhavan, Sansad Marg,
New Delhi-110001, Dated the 10th May, 2013

OFFICE MEMORANDUM

Subject : Self-certification

The Second Administrative Reforms Commission in its 12th Report titled "Citizen Centric Administration - The Heart of Governance", has recommended, adoption of self-certification provision for simplifying procedures. (www.darpg.gov.in)

2.         Taking a cue from this some Ministries / State Governments have adopted the provision of self-certification of documents like marksheet, birth certificate etc. by the applicants / stakeholders instead of asking for an attested copy of the documents by a Gazetted Officer or filing of affidavits. Under the self attestation method, the original documents are required to be produced at the final stage.

3.         You will appreciate that the above method is citizen friendly and obtaining either an attested copy or affidavit not only cost money but also involves wastage of time of the citizens and the Government officials.

3.         It is requested to kindly review the existing requirements of attested copy or affidavit in various application forms in a phased manner and wherever possible make provision for self-certification of documents, after obtaining the approval of the competent authority.

POSTMASTER GRADE-I EXAM PAPER HELD ON 30 JUN 2013

RBI makes it easier to report fake notes to banks

The next time someone passes on a fake currency note to you without your knowledge, you need not palm it off surreptitiously. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday (28/6/2013) directed banks to accept all fake notes over the counter from customers and pay them back the full amount. In return, banks will get 25% of the amount of the fake note back from the RBI.

To stop misuse of the system by unscrupulous entities, RBI also directed banks to monitor the patterns and trends of fake note detection and bring them to the notice of the central bank and the police immediately.

"Detection of counterfeit notes, at banks, should be at the back office or currency chest only. Banknotes when tendered over the counters may be checked for arithmetical accuracy and other deficiencies like whether there are mutilated notes, and appropriate credit passed on to the depositor/account or value in exchange given," the RBI noted.

Kerala High Court stays fee hike in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS)

The Kerala High Court on Monday stayed the decision of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) enhancing fees in the Kendriya Vidyalayas from the next academic year.

Justice P R Ramachandra Menon issued the interim order on a petition filed by Kendriya Vidyalaya Parents Association secretary George Felix Antony challenging the decision.

In a notification, the KVS had stated that the computer fund and Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi would be doubled. It had enhanced the Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN) fee to `500 a month. The petitioner said that the steep hike had been effected at a time when substantial amounts to the tune of `253 crore was lying unutilised in the VVN accounts all over India. This had been reported by the Joint Commissioner of the KVS. There was no rhyme or reason to enhance fees any more, especially when Article 21A and the RTE Act enjoined the Centre to impart free and compulsory education. The KVs are schools controlled by the Central Government and hence the Right To Education Act will apply to them.
