1) Cartoonist Pran, creator of iconic Chacha Chaudhary, dead: Creator of the lovable comic character Chacha Chaudhary, cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma breathed his last on Wednesday. He passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer at a hospital in Gurgaon. He was 75 years old. With a career spanning over five decades, Mr. Sharma employed a simple style of art and sense of humour to create a family of characters like Shrimatiji, Pinki, Billoo, Raman and Channi Chachi, which are regularly published in Indian magazines. He began his career in 1960 as a cartoonist for the Delhi-based newspaper ‘Milap’ with comic strip‘Daabu’ and in 1969, he sketched Chacha Chaudhary for the Hindi magazine ‘Lotpot’ which made him famous. He was born in Kasur, near Lahore in Pakistan in 1938.

The Government of India is planning to implement a new small scheme for girl child to cater the requirements of education and marriage of the girl child. This scheme was announced by the Hon’ble Finance Minister in his Budget speech and is under finalization.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Finance, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.

ISO Certification to Government Departments
An indicator has been included in the Results-Framework Document (RFD) of all the Ministries/Departments subject to RFD policy to implement ISO-9001 certification as per the approved action plan. Departments are taking the prescribed steps required to obtain ISO 9001 certification.
Certification agencies are to be engaged by the concerned Departments for obtaining ISO:9001 certification. To ensure good standards of certification process, Ministries/Departments have been advised to select a technically qualified certification body for their certification.
This information was given today by Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha by Dr. Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu.

All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968 Amended
The Government of India has amended All India Services (Conduct) Rules,1968, in rule 3(1) after sub-rule (1) by inserting sub-rule (1A) and rule 3(2) after sub-rule (2A) by inserting sub-rule (2B) and these rules are called the All India Services (Conduct) Amendment Rules, 2014.
Under sub-rule (1A), every member of the Service shall maintain:-
(i) High ethical standards, integrity and honesty;
(ii) Political neutrality;
(iii) Promoting of the principles of merit, fairness and impartiality in the discharge of duties;
(iv) Accountability and transparency;
(v) Responsiveness to the public, particularly to the weaker section;
(vi) Courtesy and good behaviour with the public.
Under sub-rule (2B), every member of the Service shall:-
(i) Commit himself to and uphold the supremacy of the Constitution and democratic values;
(ii) Defend and uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of State, public order, decency and morality;
(iii) Maintain integrity in public service;
(iv) Take decisions solely in public interest and use or cause to use public resources efficiently, effectively and economically;
(v) Declare any private interests relating to his public duties and take steps to resolve any conflicts in a way that protects the public interest;
(vi) Not place himself under any financial or other obligations to any individual or organisation which may influence him in the performance of his official duties;
(vii) Not misuse his position as civil servant and not take decisions in order to derive financial or material benefits for himself, his family or his friends;
(viii) Make choices, take decisions and make recommendations on merit alone;
(ix) Act with fairness and impartiality and not discriminate against anyone, particularly the poor and the under-privileged sections of society;
(x) Refrain from doing anything which is or may be contrary to any law, rules, regulations and established practices;
(xi) Maintain discipline in the discharge of his duties and be liable to implement the lawful orders duly communicated to him;
(xii) Be liable to maintain confidentiality in the performance of his official duties as required by any laws for the time being in force, particularly with regard to information, disclosure of which may prejudicially affect the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of State, strategic, scientific or economic interests of the State, friendly relation with foreign countries or lead to incitement of an offence or illegal or unlawful gains to any person;
(xiii) Perform and discharge his duties with the highest degree of professionalism and dedication to the best of his abilities.

2) Kamla Beniwal, governor of Mizoram, sacked: Kamla Beniwal, who had a running battle with Narendra Modi when he was Gujarat chief minister, was sacked as governor of Mizoram on Wednesday just two months before her tenure comes to an end. "The President has directed that Dr. (Smt.) Kamla shall cease to hold the office of the governor of Mizoram," a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said, exactly a month after she was shifted to Aizwal from Ahmedabad. Governor of Manipur V K Duggal has been asked to discharge the functions of the governor of Mizoram until regular arrangements are made, the communique said.
3) Cabinet cleared amendments to Juvenile Justice Act paving way for harsher punishment: A proposal which will empower the Juvenile Justice Board to decide whether a juvenile above 16 years involved in heinous crimes such as rape is to be sent to a observation home or tried in a regular court is learnt have been cleared by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday. With all central ministries giving their approval to the amendments to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, the proposal was placed on the agenda for cabinet meeting.
4) FDI cap raised to 100% for Railways, 49% for defence projects: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday allowed foreign investment in the Railways for the first time and raised limit for such investment in the defence sector, steps intended to raise funds for expansion of the Railways and encourage domestic manufacture of arms. 100 per cent foreign investment in railway infrastructure projects will be allowed while in the case of defence the limit has been raised to 49 per cent from the current 26 per cent, subject to the Indian owners exercising management control.
5) Micromax replaces Samsung as largest mobile phone vendor in India: According to a recent report by a market research firm, Micromax has replaced Samsung to become the leading mobile phone vendor in the country in terms of market share. It has also become the second largest smartphone vendor in India behind Samsung. Counterpoint, a technology market research firm, finds that Micromax with a 16.6 percent market share has overtaken Samsung (14.4 percent) as the largest mobile phonesupplier in Q2 2014. Micromax and Samsung were closely followed byNokia (10.9 percent), Karbonn (9.5 percent), and Lava (5.6 percent).

What is EMI and how is it calculated?
Loans have become an integral part of everyone's life today and help us achieve some important life goals. Be it buying a car, buying a home or affording kids overseas education, loans play a vital role in our life.
However, when we talk about loans, the most important word associated with it is EMI. EMI, which stands for equated monthly installment, is the monthly amount payments we make towards a loan we opted for. "EMI payments include contributions towards both principal and interest on the loan amount. The interest component constitutes the major portion of the EMI payment in the initial stages. As we progress along the loan tenure, the portion of interest repayment reduces and contribution towards the principal repayment increases," says Nitin Vyakaranam, founder and CEO, arthayantra.com, a leading online financial planning firm.
Loan Amortization Schedule
Loan amortization schedule is a tabular presentation of the loan with the EMI payment. It shows the break up between the interest component and principal component of a particular EMI payment. This schedule helps the investor to examine how the loan is being paid and how much outstanding loan is left to be paid. It contains information like time period of payment, EMI, interest, principal payment and the outstanding loan. In case the loan bearer wants to foreclose the loan or wants to refinance his loan, this schedule is very helpful in such cases.
What are the factors affecting an EMI?
The EMI of a loan depends on three factors:
Loan amount - This stands for the total amount that has been borrowed the individual. Interest rate - This stands for the rate at which the interest is charged on the amount borrowed. Tenure of loan - This stands for the agreed loan repayment time-frame between the borrower and the lender.
How is EMI calculated?
The mathematical formula to calculate EMI is: EMI = P x r x (1 + r)n/((1 + r)n - 1) where P= Loan amount, r= interest rate, n=tenure in number of months.
For instance, the EMI for a principal amount for Rs 1 lakh, 10% interest rate and 12 months tenure is shown in the following table:
Considering the above mentioned three governing factors, the EMI payments are directly proportional to loan amount and interest rates and are inversely proportional to the tenure of loan. The higher the loan amount or interest rate, the higher is the EMI payments and vice versa. In case of tenure of loan, though the amount of total interest to be paid increases with the increase in tenure, the EMI payments decrease with the increase in tenure.
Reasons for varied EMI payments
The other major factor which determines the EMI payments is the type of interest on the loan. In case of fixed rate loans, the EMI payments remain constant during the tenure. In case of floating rate loans, the interest rates vary based on the prevailing market rates. Hence, the EMI payments also vary whenever there is a change in the base rates.
The other factor which effects the EMI payments is the pre closure or partial payments made towards the loan. Any partial payments made towards the loan are deducted from the principal amount of the loan. This results in reduction of total interest that is to be paid. "Generally an individual who is making a partial payment will be given an option to keep the tenure constant or keep the EMI constant. If one opts for keeping the tenure constant, the monthly EMI payments will be reduced. Similarly, if one opts for keeping the EMI constant, the tenure of the loan will be reduced," says Vyakaranam.
