Windows 10 Will Be Free for Personal Users‏

All eyes are on Microsoft next year, in 2011 the team screwed up by offering a mobile-like experience to Windows customers with Windows 8, alongside pricing it rather highly, compared to Apple who decided to drop the price of OS X and make it free to all desktop users on the platform.

It looks like Microsoft will take a note from Apple’s book and make Windows 10 (also Windows 9) free for all consumers. Notice the last bit? Yep, Microsoft will still offer paid features and upgrades for enterprise, the one market they can count on.

Enterprise has been stuck in this time-lapse where Windows XP is still acceptable, but throughout the past half decade, we have seen a steady move to the new age-old option: Windows 7, which will probably last longer than Windows XP if Microsoft doesn’t hit a home-run with Windows 10.

Microsoft will make the initial upgrade to Windows 10 free for enterprise, but offer paid privileges like only having to update annually, better admin controls, more enterprise level help on basic functionality – allowing a company to install the system without having issues.

It is about time Microsoft dropped the price for Windows, especially when they offer Windows Phone – their mobile product which will become Windows 10 in 2015 – for free to smartphone users.

Microsoft will talk more about Windows 10 at BUILD in April next year. Until then, we will get to see the latest updates via the Technical Preview, launched last month by Microsoft.

Current Affairs Updates : 19th October 2014

1) BJP to form govt in Haryana, emerges as single largest party in Maharashtra: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stormed to power in Haryana on Sunday and was set to form the government in Maharashtra as well, in a verdictthat underlined Prime Minister Narendra Modi's indisputable role in helping expand the party's national footprint. Both victories are historic for the BJP. In Haryana, where the party had never been a force, it won 47 seats in a 90-member assembly to take power on its own. In Maharashtra, it emerged as the single largest party, bagging 122 seats in the 288-member House — which is enough to form a coalition government on its own terms.

2) Pritam Munde creates new record, won by record 6.96 lakh vote margin: Bhartiya Janta Party nominee for the Beed Lok Sabha by-election Dr Pritam Munde-Palve has created new records by winning the Beed LS seat by a whopping margin of 6.96 lakh votes against her nearest rival Congress nominee and former minister Ashok Patil. In the 2004 LS poll, CPI-M candidate from Arambagh (West Bengal) Anil Basu demolished his rival with the highest ever victory margin of 5,92,502 votes. Also in the recent LS election PM Narendra Modi had won by margin of 5.70 lakh votes from Vadodara. Setting a new record in poll history Dr Munde polled 9,22,416 votes against Patil's 2,26,095 votes, leading to the rest of the 10 candidates forfeiting their deposit.

3) India clinched Sultan of Johor Cup: A dominant India triumphed in the 3rd Sultan of Johor Cup with a thumping 3-0 victory over hosts Malaysia in the title clash of the U-21 hockey tournament. Amon Mirash Tirkey (22nd), Affan Yusof (52) and Manpreet (64th) were the goal-scorers for India who made up for last year’s defeat in the final against Germany. India were the deserving winners on a day when Malaysia failed to find the spark that had seen them make the final with relative ease. India drew first blood in the 22nd minute when Tirkey scored after a fine run on the left by Kothajit Singh.

4) Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games open: South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hung Won and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven were amongst the dignitaries on Saturday (18 October) who attended the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea. In a colourful laserlight show and presentation which carried the theme “Impossible Drives Us”, the ceremony welcomed 2,500 athletes from 41 countries who will compete in 23 sports over the next seven days.

Current Affairs Updates: 18 October 2014

1) Union Cabinet deregulated diesel price, approves new gas price formula: In much-awaited reform, the government on Saturday deregulated diesel prices, a move that will result in cut of Rs 3.37 per litre in diesel price. Finance minister Arun Jaitely said the Cabinet in its meeting decided to deregulate or free diesel prices. As a result, retail diesel rates will now reflect international movement in oil prices. This is the first reduction in diesel rates in over five years. Diesel rates were last cut on January 29, 2009 when they were reduced by Rs 2 a litre to Rs 30.86.

2) Karur Vysya Bank gets IDRBT award: Karur Vysya Bank has bagged the Best Bank Award for Business Intelligence Initiatives among small banks. The bank's Managing Director and Chief Executive, K Venkataraman, received the award from the Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram G Rajan. The IDRBT(Institute for Development and Research in Banking) Banking Technology Excellence award is for 2013-14. IDRBT has recognised KVB for this award for the sixth year in a row.

3) New Twitter feature allows users to listen to music: Twitter will now allow users to play podcasts, music and other audio clips direct from their timelines for the first time, the microblogging site has said. The social networking site has added a new feature to allow its users to listen music directly from the twitter stream on mobile devices. “The world’s most influential musicians and media producers already share unique audio content through Twitter every day. Today we’re introducing a new way for you to experience audio directly on Twitter,” Twitter said in a blog post.

4) Corporation Bank launched ‘e-Mandate’ service: To provide robust platform for large volume of repetitive payments, Corporation Bank has launched the ‘e-Mandate’ (digital mandate) service. A press release by the bank said that the ‘e-Mandate’ service will be beneficial to the utility companies for monthly subscriptions/bill payments; insurance companies for premium payment by policy holders; NBFCs and other finance companies for instalment payments; education institutions for school fee payment; and manufacturing companies. Now most of these transactions are done either through post-dated blank cheques or through Electronic Clearing Services (ECS). Both the above payment modes involve physical handling and movement of paper-based instruments such as cheques and mandate (in ECS).

India Post Signs an MoU with Snapdeal and Shopclues; Also to Launch INR 4909 Cr IT Project

GPO_5--621x414With 1.50 lakh post offices across the country, India Post has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian E-commerce companies Snapdeal and Shopclues, to join hands and propel the e-commerce logistics.

As stated in a release by iGovernment, on the occasion of Business Development Day on 14th Oct 2014 the department of postal services decided to join hands with the two online marketplaces, to cater to their logistics needs with its wide reach. In return, for getting their support for an INR 4909 crore IT project, to bring in electronic connectivity and capability across 1.5 lakhs Post Offices for enhanced delivery of all mail & financial services.

Vijay Ajmera, Sr. Vice President (Finance) Snapdeal.com said that they are happy to choose Department of Post as their delivering partner and this partnership will provide their e-commerce business a wider reach and network.

Speaking about this association, Sanjay Sethi, CEO & Co-Founder, ShopClues said“We’re a marketplace for the masses and nearly 65% of our customers and merchants are based in the non-metros or tier 2/3 towns. With the widest delivery network in the country, India Post will definitely be a significant partner in our logistics operations. On a peak day, ShopClues services over 85,000 orders and with this tie-up, we expect to improve our offering for customers across 25,000 pin codes.”

John Samuel, Member Postal Services Board said, “India Post is no longer what it was and is going through a period of profound change. In the last few years, the post office is reinventing itself to provide services that fit into the requirement of all e-commerce players. I am very glad that the Department of Posts and ShopClues.com have signed a statement of intent about the strategic business relationship that both the companies will take forward.”

ShopClues initially had a local tie up with the Department of Posts whereby they would pick up their products only from their fulfillment centers. However, post this MOU, ShopClues and India Post have now associated with each other on a national level.

The Postal Department is trying to keep up with the changing trends of Indian consumers. Considering that this body caters to the maximum number of pin codes in comparison to any private logistics firm, such a tie-up could be a boon for the online players.
