Increasing knowledge declines human brain's capacity, scientists say

LONDON: Age mellows all, says the famous saying. Traditionally it is thought that age leads to a steady deterioration of brain function.

However, a study has for the first time argued that older brains may take longer to process ever increasing amounts of knowledge, and this has often been misidentified as declining capacity.

Experts now say that accumulation of years of wisdom and increased knowledge about the world and surroundings slow down human brain function as they age, much like what happens to the hard drive of a computer which is full.
Older brains slow due to greater experience, rather than cognitive decline, the study now says.

The study, led by Dr Michael Ramscar of theUniversity of Tuebingen takes a critical look at the measures that are usually thought to show that our cognitive abilities decline across adulthood. Instead of finding evidence of decline, the team discovered that most standard cognitive measures are flawed, confusing increased knowledge for declining capacity.

Dr Ramscar's team used computers, programmed to act as though they were humans, to read a certain amount each day, learning new things along the way.

When the researchers let a computer "read" a limited amount, its performance on cognitive tests resembled that of a young adult.

However, if the same computer was exposed data which represented a lifetime of experiences its performance looked like that of an older adult. Often it was slower, not because its processing capacity had declined, but because increased "experience" had caused the computer's database to grow, giving it more data to process, and that processing takes time.

"What does this finding mean for our understanding of our ageing minds, for example older adults' increased difficulties with word recall? These are traditionally thought to reveal how our memory for words deteriorates with age, but Big Data adds a twist to this idea," said Dr Ramscar.

"Technology now allows researchers to make quantitative estimates about the number of words an adult can be expected to learn across a lifetime, enabling the team to separate the challenge that increasing knowledge poses to memory from the actual performance of memory itself".

"Imagine someone who knows two people's birthdays and can recall them almost perfectly. Would you really want to say that person has a better memory than a person who knows the birthdays of 2000 people, but can only match the right person to the right birthday nine times out of ten?" asks Ramscar.

Aadhaar helps weed out bogus ration cards

Online databases identify persons enrolled in more than one BPL card
While citizens are agitated over the Aadhaar-LPG link, the identity card has proved to be a big help for the Chief Rationing Officer’s (CRO) Unit, Hyderabad.
The unit has successfully managed to weed out over 60,000 bogus ration cards in the city with the help of Aadhaar.
A total of 63,723 bogus ration cards have been deactivated since July 2012, while 19,754 genuine cards were issued by the CRO’s office in Hyderabad district.

Online databases
And to make sure that no data is lost, all the information has been collected online through the Electronic Point of Service (EPOS) and the Electronic Public Distribution System (EPDS) programmes, two databases created in 2012 to store information of ration card holders.
Both the EPOS and EPDS were started as pilot projects by the CRO’s office with the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Officials from the CRO’s office, Hyderabad, said that EPOS and EPDS ensure that one person cannot enrol himself in more than one ration card, as it is easily detected.
“During the process of streamlining, we received applications from citizens with different issues, and thanks to both the new databases, things are settling down,” mentioned an official on condition of anonymity.
The Aadhaar cards are being used to match information of citizens on ration cards.
“We did not make it compulsory for Aadhaar cards to be shown for identification. However, we advised applicants to bring them as Aadhaar cards are genuine.
People are more than willing since they will benefit by getting proper ration cards,” the official explained.
Although the official refused to indicate the extent of duplicity among the white cards, he said that 70 per cent of the seeding process on ration cards with the information on Aadhaar cards was completed, with another 10 per cent of the work underway. There are 6,73,144 white or below poverty line (BPL) ration card holders and 5,48,851 pink ration card holders in the district.

Pinpointing problems
M. Padma, Chief Rationing Officer, Hyderabad district, said her personnel were able to pinpoint problems people face with ration cards, with the help of EOPS and EPDS. “We were also able to invalidate cards on the names of people who have migrated from the district,” she added.

Five ways to prepare for an appraisal conversation

Appraisal conversations, besides being the most anticipated, can leave one tongue-tied. But some amount of preparation and research can assuage employee anxiety, says ET.

1. Gather Data

One of the problems with Indian appraisees is the sheer absence of data collectionbefore appraisals, says P Thiruvengadam, senior director, human capital at Deloitte. "Professionals must take stock of KRAs or other essential performance records before heading to an appraisal chat. This can help remove biases," he says.

2. Understand your Manager

Understand and make an attempt to anticipate the manager's questions, expectations and requirements. "Talking to fellow employees or people who might have been appraised by the manager before the discussions can give an idea of the manager'smind map and conversation style and what he or she seeks from juniors," says Thiruvengadam. If one has been appraised by the manager before, one can refer to notes of one's experience from the previous year.

3. Maintain Regular Contact

Show employees the 'big picture' of the organisation. Share the good news as well as the bad. "Create visibility, use plain speak, talk about the challenges and explain what you are still trying to figure out in an open and transparent manner," adds Madappa.

4. Highlight Work

Since the manager's performance and KRAs are closely linked to the employee's, Thiruvengadam says one of the most powerful tools to engage the managers is to have a conversation on work matters or projects that would have impacted the team's or manager's individual performance in a positive way. "Subtly highlighting such aspects can help one gain a positive impression for the work done for the team," he says.

5. Emphasise Skills

The emphasis on behavioural skills will gain greater significance in the future, says Tarun Katyal, chief human resources officer at MTS India. "Many global reports are suggesting how performance targets are going to be enhanced and many of these professionals may end up landing far more complex roles and assignments," he says. It is important to emphasise how one gets the work done. This could about networking or getting the team together — there is a greater emphasis on how targets were achieved, he adds.
